Pakistani Ordnance Factories POF-4 Pistol

POF 4 is a semi-auto weapon made by Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) which has been classified as a pistol after some changes in the basic select fire version. The automatic version is being used extensively by Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA). It was a few years ago that POF decided to remodel this compact machine pistol for civilian use. It is based on the H&K MP5 design and employs a delayed blow back , roller locked system. POF has been making various weapons under HK licenses, such as the SMG PK/PK1, the SMG MP5A2/MP5P3 and the G3 rifle. The civilian version dubbed as the POF 4 has a 15 round magazine, it is semi-auto (irreversible) and has no buttstock. These changes have enabled it to be classified as a pistol. A similar weapon has been exported to the US named as POF 5KX pistol (minus the front hand grip). The weapon has received good reviews in the US according to some websites. In fact some time ago POF was not selling this weapon to anyone within the country because of orders received from overseas. This may explain its popularity, perhaps.

Technical Specs:

  • Caliber: 9 x 19 mm
  • Semi-auto (Irreversible)
  • Muzzle Velocity: 375 m/sec
  • Barrel length: 115 mm or 4.5 inches
  • Magazine capacity: 15 rounds
  • Length: 340 mm or 13.3 inches
  • Rear sight: Rotary type
  • Front sight: Fixed
  • Weight: 2 Kg

POF has been making good quality weapons for a long time. It is only recently that POF has changed its policy of selling weapons to civilians. This includes five different types of pistols, and a semi-auto sporting/hunting rifle chambered in .308.

The POF4 comes with two 15 round magazines, a two point sling and a cleaning kit comprising of various brushes, pull through and oil bottle etc. The pistol is (irreversible) semi-auto because local laws forbid possession of automatics. So there is just two firing positions “S” and “E”.  At 2 Kgs it’s a heavy pistol but since it is not a compact or sub-compact but a machine pistol converted to semi-auto hence the weight. The pistol grip, front grip and rear cap is (Polymer) plastic, rest of the pistol is steel.

Taking it apart is pretty easy, just removing three push-pins and the whole thing comes apart. That in fact is very reminiscent of HK weapons like the G3 for instance. It has fixed front sights and rotary adjustable rear sight. It has two magazine release options, one on the right side and the other just ahead of the trigger guard. The basic pistol employs a Phosphate coating which isn’t very impressive, the one being reviewed was duracoated in Steel Grey to guard against rust and to enhance its looks.

By removing the three push-pins the whole gun comes apart.

Here is a close up of the magazine release.

Since its not select fire, the safety has two positions only, Fire and Safe.

The bolt carrier disassembled.

The POF4 is a well made pistol. The internals do not show machining or tooling marks. The basic finish isn’t good, but can be improved. With lots of after market accessories the POF4 can be improved by adding a stock, or changing from semi-auto only to select fire. It can be a good weapon for home defense or range fun. The pistol is priced at around Rs. 115,000 in Pakistan and since it’s launch has sold quite well.

  1. You’ve got to wonder if POF will start to branch out a bit and become a major player in arms manufacturing with a wider variety of designs to appeal to more customers, plenty of money to be made after all.
