In a post for The Firearm Blog, we were able to find a photograph of the Kabul Arsenal from the late 1800s. In trying to locate the arsenal through the photograph, we actually were able to replicate the photograph today by climbing up “Kohe-Asmayee”, the hill that lies across the Asmayee River from the Kabul Arsenal.
Although that picture certainly had some detail that was very useful in comparing the arsenal to the current day location, we’ve recently came across a photograph that provides even more detail, and from a higher vantage point on that hill (it could even be an aerial photograph it is that high).
The actual print/photograph was originally posted on eBay from an account in France. We purchased it.
The eBay description was in French and is as follows-
Afghanistan

Photographie originale, 25 cm x 20,5 cm environ.

Traces-marques côté haut droit, marges abîmées, coins tapés
Silah Report is working with Armament Research Servies and a Martini-Henry collector named Vernon Easley in order to publish an in-depth academic paper on the arsenal itself in the Journal of Arms & Armour.

This is the original photograph we were going off of and the ensuing “Then & Now” comparison.
