Perry is one of Israel’s premier security law attorneys, a former police instructor and a former member of the Israeli Defence Forces. In this episode, Perry enlightened us about the legal framework for firearms in Israel, gave us a deeper insight on the Israeli culture in relation to firearms in contrast to what is being seen on popular media and the selection of firearms in the security field (as well as his own taste in firearms).

Presentation of Israeli “Gun Culture” in Popular Media
Initially, Perry discussed with us the subject of the presentation of Israelis in popular media such as movies. In his perspective and other Israelis’, they find it funny that Israelis are presented as “modern-day Spartans” who dedicate their life since their youth to serving the military or security establishment and it becomes “woven” in their identity as Israelis. So for some non-Israelis that get all their knowledge about the State of Israel through social media outlets and movies out there, the concept of an Israeli without any kind of military or security background might sound odd, to say the least.
Perry briefly explained his perspective that he thinks given what Israel managed to achieve during the Six Day War in 1967 was seen in the eyes of many countries as a miraculous victory, it was the keystone for that ‘modern Spartan’ stereotype. He explained how the acts of terrorism that occurred after the Six Day War placed Israel at the forefront of combating terrorism and participating in asymmetrical warfare that became a signature for most of the 21st century’s battlefields. It is actually common to hear in “expert circles” how Israel has vastly more experience than most Western countries, including the US, in asymmetrical warfare, whether it is true or not, that is a completely different matter.
Security Caps
In the second part of the podcast, Miles, and Perry discuss the variety of different colored caps used by Israeli security in an effort to make friend or foe identification easier for the security. Perry explained the procedure on how the cap would be pulled out of the security guard’s apparel and worn in a specific way so he would be identified as friendly if he encounters other security personnel. There are also other colors, including official and unofficial ones. One example would be a cap worn to identify its wearer as an “armed civilian.”

Vladimir Onokoy and Israeli Handgun Tactics
Amused by Vladimir Onokoy’s comedic video on Israeli handgun tactics, Perry decided to take it a bit more seriously and address it, explaining the “Israeli mentality” behind certain actions.

Crude Made Small Arms in The West Bank
The topic of organized crime was brought up and Perry spoke about how there is a high concern regarding Israeli Arabs who tend to solve any argument amongst themselves with firearms when honor is involved; a feature that is quite common in certain regions and cultures in MENA and Central Asia. According to Perry, a quite common weapon is the “Carlo” a crudely made 9×19mm submachine gun that is based on the Carl Gustav M/45 – Port Said; you can read more about the Carlo here.

Selection of Firearms in Israel’s Security
Finally, we discussed with Perry his opinion on pistols and the ones he used during his time as an instructor in the police force. Perry surprised us by being a big fan of the 9×19mm Glock 19 and dislikes the quite famous Israeli pistol the Jericho 941 and loathes the Desert Eagle and describes it as an impractical firearm. During the podcast, he gave us quite the insight based on his experience with those firearms and the perspective of his colleagues as well.
