The VHS-2 bullpup self-loading rifle manufactured by Croatia’s HS Produkt became one of the most frequently seen rifles during the Iraqi counter-offensives against ISIS during 2015-17. The rifle regularly appeared in news reports and social media posts and became somewhat synonymous with the fighting for Fallujah and Mosul.
While the 5.56×45mm VHS self-loading rifle uses a short stroke gas piston and typically feeds from proprietary translucent polymer magazine but magazine well inserts for STANAG magazines are also available. It is the standard issue rifle of the Croatian Army it also equips a significant number of Iraqi police and military units and has seen extensive combat use over the last ten years. While the VHS-2 took part in the 2015-16 French rifle trials, eventually beaten by the Heckler & Koch HK416, HS Produkt’s biggest customer for the rifle has been Iraq. HS Produkt initially supplied the Iraqi government and Kurdish forces with VHS-1 rifles for trials and testing in 2014. The following year the first contract for 10,000 improved VHS-2 rifles was agreed.

The photograph above originates Iraq, circa 2015, it shows what is likely the original boxing for the VHS-2s which reached Iraq. The rifle is seen with iron sights, and the box has cutouts for 6 magazines. The box also has an Arabic user manual and probably included a cleaning kit originally. This photograph was taken from a black market classified advertisement for the rifle, which was reportedly priced at $8,500 at the time.

This was followed in 2018 by Croatian news reports which suggested that as many as 30,000 VHS-2 rifles had been procured by the Iraqi government. Other reports suggest as many as 100,000 of the rifles have been delivered. The rifle has been issued to the Iraqi Federal Police, including the Emergency Response Division (seen in the hands of members of the unit when it was also described as the Emergency Response Unit and Emergency Response Brigade). The Iraqi Special Operations Forces also received a substantial number of the rifles and they were frequently seen during the counter-offensive against ISIS and during the battles for Fallujah and Mosul in 2016.

The tweet below, dating from 2016, shows a cache of 13 VHS-2s captured by ISIS in Iraq’s Saladin Governorate which appeared in an Islamic State propaganda video.

Various variants of the rifle have been identified in Iraq and in neighbouring Syria including the VHS-1 variant, the VHS-D1, the improved VHS-2 and the VHS-K short barrelled carbine. The majority of the rifles seen feed from a proprietary polymer magazines, reminiscent of the G36’s translucent magazines, although feeding from STANAG magazines using magazine well adaptors has been documented.

The rifle has also unsurprisingly surfaced in Syria. Seen in relatively small numbers, these rifles were likely captured from Iraqi units by ISIS before their retreat from Iraq. Some have also been seen in the hands of Pro-Syrian government fighters.
Since entering Croatian service the VHS has equipped the Croatian Army on peacekeeping deployments around the world and in Afghanistan with the Croatian contingent of ISAF (and subsequently Operation Resolute Support) until 2020.
