Stars and Rifles Part 1: Ottoman Hexagram Proof Marks

One of the peculiarities of a front line soldier’s life throughout the history of increasingly intense warfare is the heightened susceptibility to superstition and the supernatural, expressed through a plethora of different talismans, charms and other curious oddities. One might think of the strange British Touch Wud [wood] charms of World War I, the lucky rabbit feet worn by American soldiers in Vietnam or Japanese charm pouches worn during World War II. It is a common occurrence across all civilizations to feel shielded by the pretense of spiritual protection, as fleeting and illusory as it may seem. When the flesh is at its most vulnerable, man seeks different ways to somewhat dampen the fear for the imminent threat of death and disfigurement.

Turkish Service Rifle Anti-Aircraft Volley Fire Techniques

A peculiar feature of recent Turkish Armed Forces (TAF, also Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri/TSK in Turkish) service rifles is a 21st century twist on the employment of small unit volley fire. Akdaş AK-40GL: Turkey’s New Underbarrel Grenade Launcher

In October 2019, the Turkish military announced that the first 500 units of the new 40×46SRmm Akdaş AK-40GL grenade launchers had completed delivery. A total of 8,000 units were ordered, with 2,500 additional launchers slated to be delivered very soon, according to the manufacturer. As with many contemporary, single-shot grenade launchers, AK-40GLs can be configured as a standalone unit with a stock and pistol grip. However, these launchers are primarily intended for use in conjunction the MPT-76 (7.62×51mm) and MPT-55 (5.56×45mm) series of self-loading rifles, produced for the Turkish military by MKEK, as an under barrel mounted system.

Safety in Numbers: Atatürk’s Linguistic Reforms in Gewehr 88/05 Rear Sight Ladders

This guest article was contributed by Omer Sayadi, a researcher who studies symbols, weapon markings, and vexillology of the MENA region. He holds a Master’s degree in Arabic & Islamic Studies from KU Leuven. His work can be found on Twitter, and on his website.

The Gewehr 1888 is a 19th century German bolt-action rifle designed by the German Rifle Commission in the late 1880s. The rifle was developed in the wake of the introduction of smokeless powder in an effort to keep pace with European rivals. The German army immediately adopted this rifle for military service under the colloquial name of ‘Reichgewehr’, or commission rifle. Pressured by the French development of the Lebel Model 1886 rifle, firing 8 mm cartridges with a smokeless propellant, the Germans developed a similar type of ammunition to be used with their new commission rifle, resulting in the creation of the M/88 8 mm cartridge, loaded with a round-nose bullet.

Yazicilarav’s Cosmos Bolt Action Rifle at SHOT 2018

The relatively small Turkish company Yazicilarav brought out their Cosmos bolt action rifle to SHOT 2018 this year. The commercial rifle is chambered in .308 Win and .223 Rem. It also comes in a “Camo”, “NATO Green”, or “Black” finish. Although it is marketed as “Multi-Caliber”, this only appears to be in product offerings instead of a true multi-caliber interchangeable barrel. The operating mechanism is very simple, appearing to be a Mauser action, utilizing front bolt lugs to lock the action in place.

The detachable magazine has a polymer body and uses an ambidextrous magazine release.

The bolt has a 90-degree throw, has a knurled handle, and is highly polished. The stock can collapse to the left side of the rifle.

Note the adjustable trigger shoe and the safety. Also note the PSG-1-esque pistol grip.

Notice what appear to be M-Lok similar or possibly compatible rail inserts on the handguard, and the Atlas bipods attached to the rifle.

There is a trigger bar that extends to the Kalashnikov trigger mechanism in the rear.

The shotguns are offered with red dot sights, plain BUIS sights, or an improvised A2 handguard that extends the entire length of the Picatinny optics rail. Magazines offered are either a 2, 5, and 8 shell configuration.

There are four available finishes: Black, Burnt Bronze Cerakoted, Dark Earth Cerakoted, and OD Green Cerakoted.
